Linphone represents the state of the art in securing real-time communications. It offers secure authentication, end-to-end encryption for all types of media exchanged, including during conferences, and resilience against the threats posed by future quantum computers.
Secure user authentication
Linphone supports multiple authentication methods to validate the identity of the various parties involved in a communication: the applications that initiate or receive a call or message, and the server that relays these communications.
- Verification of the SIP server’s authenticity based on x509 certificates.
- Verification of the user’s identity via hash-based authentication (SHA 256) or TLS certificate.
- Secure connection between the client (user) and the server using SIP/TLS.
End-to-end encryption for audio/video calls, messages, and shared files.
Our end-to-end encryption technology for exchanged data (voice, video, text) ensures the confidentiality of your communications, even in the event of server compromise.
- Support for standardized encryption protocols: SRTP, SRTP-DTLS, and ZRTP
- Modern encryption based on Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH)
- End-to-end encryption for asynchronous messaging based on pre-positioned keys and the Double Ratchet algorithm, derived from the Signal protocol.

Post-Quantum Encryption
The Linphone application is likely the first open-source real-time communication software to integrate a robust encryption algorithm resistant to future quantum computer attacks. This algorithm, Cristals-Kyber, is one of the winners of the international competition organized by NIST to develop standardized post-quantum encryption algorithms. By adopting post-quantum encryption, systems can protect against technological advancements and ensure the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data, even in the face of the challenges posed by quantum technology advancements.
Ephemeral messages
Ephemeral messaging allows you to send messages that automatically delete after being read or after a predefined period. This confidential feature ensures that sensitive information is not accessible indefinitely. By minimizing the risk of information leaks, ephemeral messaging addresses your growing needs for security and privacy in communications. Additionally, the automatic deletion of messages helps reduce the storage of messages that have no need to be retained.
Option to automatically enable mandatory encryption by default
Activated through remote configuration in your version of Linphone, this mode enforces the activation of security features. The user no longer chooses whether to encrypt their communications; instead, all communications are encrypted by default.
Trust in communication
To ensure that your communications are not compromised by man-in-the-middle attacks, where a third party could intercept exchanges by impersonating you or your contact, Linphone provides a trust verification mechanism with each of your interlocutors’ devices. When this trust is established, a blue badge appears around the user’s profile.
