Everything you need to know about our telecommunications solution

The principle of a softphone based on standardized protocols

The principle of a softphone based on standardized protocolsA softphone allows you to make calls and send instant messages over the Internet to other users using the same protocol. However, it is not possible to reach mobile or landline numbers without a SIP trunking service provided by a third-party operator.

Introduction to the SIP Protocol

The SIP protocol (Session Initiation Protocol, standardized by the IETF) is currently the most widely used telecommunications protocol. While other protocols exist, such as H263 or XMPP, SIP stands out due to its versatility, supporting all types of real-time communications: voice, video, and text.

How does Linphone work?

For two Linphone applications to communicate with each other (as VoIP “clients”), a “server” software is required to relay communications from one “client” to the other.

Getting Started – How to Use Linphone?

Step 1 – Download the Linphone app

Step 2 – Set up an account

Creating a free Linphone account

Access the free SIP service at sip.linphone.org, reserved for the community of individual users. This service is free, but without support guarantees.

Connecting with a third-party SIP account

You have the option to use a different SIP account than Linphone by selecting a “third-party SIP account” from the app’s home interface.

Step 3 – Start communicating with Linphone

First login

Once your account is created, log in to the Linphone app to start interacting with other users and your contacts. Whether it’s for making audio calls or sending instant messages, Linphone offers a smooth and intuitive experience to keep in touch with your colleagues.

Linphone features according to the type of account used

Test all features by using our free SIP service.

Accounts created through our server solution, such as those from our free SIP service online, allow you to test all features.

Discover Linphone with limited features for third-party SIP accounts

Third-party SIP accounts, such as those provided by your VoIP operator or those created with your organization’s IP-PBX, do not allow you to test features that require the Flexisip server suite (video conferencing, group chat, and presence).

💡 However, you can make 1-to-1 audio calls if the server supports the SIP protocol, as well as enjoy basic 1-to-1 chat if the server supports the SIP SIMPLE protocol
